Tournament Report: Mastery by the Sea: GM Zhou Tops 31th Space Coast Open

Updated: May 19

The 2026 Space Coast Open Chess Festival marked a significant milestone, transforming Melbourne, Florida, into a global chess hub for an intensive weekend from April 24–26. With a record-breaking roster of 246 competitors arriving from fifteen different U.S. states and countries as far as Morocco and Colombia, the 31st edition underscored the event's growing reputation.

This page provides a centralized resource for the festival's varied highlights and competitive outcomes. You will find in-depth reporting on the five-section the main tournament detailing the fierce competition that led to GM Jianchao Zhou’s fourth consecutive title.

We also celebrate the "perfect sweeps" achieved in three of the sections and the high-speed drama of the Saturday night Blitz, won by GM Samy Shoker with a perfect 6-0 score, which drew its own record-setting field of 52 players.

Beyond the final scores, this collection explores the festival’s broader mission, including free educational lectures provided by Grandmasters and the enduring legacy of the "Spirit of Wojo" brilliancy prizes. To offer a complete retrospective of the weekend, we have included access to 48 annotated games, final standings for all divisions, and extensive photographic galleries and video broadcasts capturing the intensity and sportsmanship of the participants. Don’t miss the ceremonial first move by Wayne Ivey, the popular Brevard County Sheriff. Together, these resources document a premier weekend of chess supported by the dedicated team at the Space Coast Chess Foundation.
